Cosmos draw SuperSport United in first game of Gauteng tournament

Jomo Cosmos have been drawn to play SuperSport United in the first match of this weekend’s Gauteng Champion of Champions soccer tournament in Vosloorus Stadium.

At the draw ceremony held at Johannesburg Stadium on Thursday afternoon, Ezenkosi was the first team picked out of the pot, and will slug it out with the cup holders in the opening game of the day kicking off at 12h00.

Amongst dignitaries present at the event were Jomo Cosmos Head Coach, Jomo Sono, SuperSport United assistant coach, Kaitano Tembo, and Gavin Hunt, Head Coach of Bidvest Wits.

Ezenkosi boss, Jomo Sono said his team would be banking on ‘home advantage’ to win the ultimate prize.

“Yes indeed we have home advantage and we’re going to capitalize on that. If you must recall, we’ve not lost a game since moving back to Vosloorus, and we don’t want to start losing now.

“Our fans are looking forward to us winning the trophy and we are not going to disappoint them,” he stressed.

The competition format remains the same, with only 45 minutes allocated to each game. In the event of a draw, the dribble out format will be used, with a player coming from outside the box and having ten seconds to beat the keeper.

According to the MC, Thabang Mazibuko, loser of Game1 will lock horns with Bidvest Wits in the second match, while winner of the first game plays against Wits in the final round.

In her preceding speech, a representative of Gauteng’s Department of Sports, Arts and Recreation, Ms Philasani Mubebe, said the driving force and key objective of her department’s decision to sponsor the tournament was to stimulate the economy of Ekurhuleni.

Meanwhile, each of the participating teams have chosen a charity of their choice to donate their prize money of R100,000 to, with an additional R80,000 to be given to the winning team’s charity by the organizers.

The organizers further disclosed that a curtain raiser game will be played between Flamingo FC and Vision Hotspurs at 10h00, while SABC 1 will run a ‘delayed live’ telecast of the tournament proper later in the day.
