Jomo Cosmos virtually confirmed their readiness for the upcoming season when they secured narrow margin victories over two selected Uthukela sides at the weekend in Ladysmith.
A trip to the Settlers Park home of the Bulldogs Rugby team paid handsome dividends for Jomo Sono’s new look side as they prepare for this weekend’s opening National First Division (NFD) fixture at home to Ajax Cape Town.
In the first of two matches, Cosmos defeated a selected Uthukela U23 team by a lone goal thanks to Xolani Mpontshane’s first half strike.
The second game of the day saw Ezenkosi’s main team (captained by Matsilele Junior Sono), coasting to a seemingly unassailable 3-0 lead against the Uthukela XI before the home side rallied back with two late goals to finish the game at 3-2.
Nigerian hit man, Chibuike “Victor” Ohizu converted Riaan Hanamub’s perfect cross for the first goal as Ezenkosi asserted their superiority in the opening stages.
After the break, Cosmos danger man, Vusimuzi “Skheshe” Mncube doubled his team’s lead with a fierce low shot that found the back of the net.
Substitute Dawny “Chillies” Makgatho then converted a penalty to make it 3-0 before late goals by Ntokozo Hlomuka and Mbuso Dlamini reduced the deficit for Uthukela XI.
Cosmos take a break from their busy schedule on Monday, but normal build-up session resumes on Tuesday afternoon at the team’s training facility in Springfield.
