Jomo Cosmos Under17 side failed to advance to the knockout stages of the ongoing Engen Knockout Challenge tournament after bowing out to Orlando Pirates in their last group game on Saturday morning.
The young Buccaneers romped to an unassailable 3-0 lead in a space of five minutes before the break, and virtually finished the job on the stroke of half time.
It was a horror show for the Ezenkosi lads after Sphamandla Xaba drilled home the opening goal from a corner kick. Pirates fired home their second soon after, as Tebogo Modiba connected a through pass from midfield.
And just a couple of minutes later, Katlego Cwinyani completed the rout when his fiery shot found the top right corner of the net, beating goalkeeper Themba Buabhisa hands down. .
Arnold Mpenga would later grab a last minute consolation for Ezenkosi with a sensational long ranger, but it was too little, too late as Cosmos crashed out after finishing third in Group A behind winners Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United.
Cosmos boys never really got their acts together against the young sea robbers despite the return of team skipper and midfield general, Kamogelo Ledwaba, who missed the previous day’s matches against Meadowlands and SuperSport United due to academic commitments.
Later in the day, Cosmos again failed to redeem themselves in the Positional Play offs when they lost 2-0 to Group C whipping boys Eesterust FC.
Bradley Booysen knocked in the opening goal prior to half time, before Le-Shanu Bergsteedt finished off the job in the second stanza.
The soccer fiesta continues on Sunday as Cosmos Juniors engage another team in the Play offs.
