Cosmos players (yellow strips) in a group pic with the victorious Spartak side after Thursday’s quarterfinal duel in Shenyang.
The winning streak enjoyed by Jomo Cosmos Under13 at the Gothia Cup finally came to a halt at the quarterfinal stages on Thursday morning as the team went down 3-0 to Spartak Tashkent Academy from Uzbekistan.
It was a sad end to the team’s outstanding performances that saw them take all the maximum points in Group B following wins over Shen Rui, XinAn Pearl and Xinzhang Soccer School of Chinese Taipei.
Cosmos were on the receiving end of questionable officiating during the quarterfinal fixture in Shenyang, in which two penalties were awarded to Spartak who led 2-0 at the break.
The Ezenkosi boys came back stronger in the second stanza and created several scoring opportunities but could not break down their opponents’ defensive wall. Spartak would go on to wrap up a fine win with another goal to put the game beyond Ezenkosi’s young gallant soldiers.
In spite of the loss, however, there were positives to take home as three Cosmos players namely Tristen Morris, Loyiso Thutang, and Heaven Sereetsi, caught the attention of soccer scouts at the tournament, and could be on to bigger things soon.
The Cosmos entourage returns home next Monday morning.
