Sunday afternoon’s top notch NFD tie between Jomo Cosmos and Mthatha Bucks has been officially moved from Ezenkosi’s familiar terrain of Olen Park to the nearby Fanie du Toit sport stadium inside the North West University complex.
According to top sources, the change in venue is politically-motivated, as a dispute between the City Council and current tenants of Olen Park, Leopards Rugby Union, makes it virtually impossible for the facility to be available for Cosmos this weekend.
It is feared that the deadlock may not be resolved even after the September 25 fixture, and as a result, Cosmos will be playing their next three home games at Fanie du Toit Stadium, beginning with Bucks.
After this weekend, Ezenkosi next host AmaZulu on October 16, and a week later, welcome Cape Town All-Stars to the same venue.
The University ground serves as Cosmos’ alternative home ground, although the team has never featured there since shifting base to Potchefstroom last season.
An official statement from Cosmos said negotiations on the stadium issue had been ongoing for more than a year, and the team remains hopeful that both parties would reach a compromise as soon as possible.
