Ledwaba rescues crucial point as Cosmos hold Cape Umoya in NFD contest

Jomo Cosmos fought hard to salvage a 1-all draw in their NFD tie away to Cape Umoya United last Saturday as Ezenkosi’s losing streak finally ended.

Seun Ledwaba’s stoppage time equalizer cancelled out Gavin Hammers’ 77th minute opener as the teams shared the spoils at Athlone Stadium.

Victory for Cape Umoya could have seen Cosmos on the receiving end of eight successive away defeats until Ledwaba’s face-saving goal in the last minute of stoppage time.

The home side had Ezenkosi on the back foot for most part of the game but could not convert their numerous chances into goals.

The game started at a rather slow pace, with neither side willing to give anything away. Midway through the first half, Ezenkosi got a rare chance to break the deadlock, but Carlo Gie shot wide from a free kick.

Shortly before half time, Cosmos goalkeeper, Mwenya Chibwe kept his team in the game with a brilliant save to deny Koapeng Letsie who fired from a tight angle.

On the hour mark, Xolani Mpontshane laid on a fine pass for Seun Ledwaba but the midfielder failed to hit the target.

With 13 minutes left on the clock, Cape Umoya were finally rewarded when substitute Gavin Hammers scored the first goal from open play.

And just when the hosts thought they were home and dry, Seun Ledwaba popped up to finish up a rebound from goalkeeper Dino Visser to restore parity in stoppage time.

The 1-1 result left Cosmos clutching onto the 12th position on the NFD log with 24 points in 22 matches.

Cosmos continue their fight for survival when they host 2nd-placed Royal Eagles at Makhulong Stadium on Sunday.
