A late surge by Jomo Cosmos denied log leaders Stellenbosch FC the maximum points as Ezenkosi rallied to snatch a point in their thrilling NFD contest at Makhulong Stadium last Sunday.
Leading scorer Iqraam Rayners opened the scoring after the half hour mark to give Stellenbosch a 1-0 cushion at half time, but substitute Inky Masuku restored parity for Ezenkosi when he struck in the dying moments of the game.
A rather drab first half saw the visitors grabbing the lead through hit man Iqraam Rayners who dribbled past Cosmos defender, Stanley Umukoro and slid the ball past the groping hands of Melusi Buthelezi.
It was a 50-50 contest between the teams with neither side able to create clear cut opportunities even after Rayners’ opener.
However, the game came alive in the second stanza after the Cosmos bench rang changes that saw Inky Masuku and Tumi Ngwepe replacing Ayanda Nkosi and Seun Ledwaba respectively.
As the clock ticked away, Ezenkosi attacked relentlessly putting the visitors on the back foot, and during a goalmouth scramble, Ngwepe laid on a splitting pass for Masuku, whose sublime finish sent Cosmos fans into raptures.
Ngwepe should have wrapped up the game for Cosmos in stoppage time, but his ferocious shot ricocheted off the crossbar after beating goalkeeper Lee-Raoul Langeveldt.
The draw left Cosmos in 13th position on the NFD log with 29 points from 26 matches, while Stellenbosch maintained their top spot with 49 points.
This weekend, Cosmos continue their battle for survival with a tricky tie away to fellow strugglers Real Kings FC in Durban.
