Maziya’s late brace breaks Mbombela resistance as Cosmos return to winning ways

Maziya saved Cosmos’ blushes with two late strikes

Jomo Cosmos returned to winning ways in the NFD with a commanding 2-0 defeat of Mbombela United at Vosloorus Stadium last Sunday.

Ezenkosi thus avenged first round defeat inflicted by the Mpumalanga side last October, interestingly with a similar score line.

A late quick-fire brace by dashing winger, Silas Maziya settled the contest in wet circumstances after the game was earlier called off by referee Michael Mosemeng following a rainstorm.

Sunday’s sterling performance marked Ezenkosi’s first league win of 2019 following successive defeats by Maccabi FC, Ajax Cape Town and TS Sporting in the new year.

Both sides showed attacking intent for the larger part of the game, and the end to end attacking football put fans on the edge of their seats.

The home side probed deep into Mbombela’s back line for long spells in the first half period but lacked the killer bite to finish off goal bound moves.

Cosmos men Zaphaniah Mbokoma, Silas Maziya, Junior Sono, Xolani Mpontshane and Seun Ledwaba went close before the break but could not register their names on the score sheet.

The visitors had a few chances of their own, but front men Felix Badenhorst, Rethabile Soso and Phetolo Sekome failed to breach the solid Cosmos back line of Ange Lebahi, Mpumelelo Zondi, Riaan Hanamub, Stanley Umukoro and goalkeeper Mwenya Chibwe.

Just before half time, Mbokoma should have given Cosmos the lead when he found himself on a one-on-one situation with Mbombela goalkeeper, Wensten Van Der Linde, but the midfielder inexplicably missed the target.

Both teams headed into the break still deadlocked at 0-0, and on resumption, the attacking flow continued with either side looking to score the opening goal.

The best chance fell to Badenhorst minutes after the second half kicked off, but the Swazi international shot wide from the rebound after Chibwe had stopped his initial attempt.

The Cosmos bench would later ring vital changes as Inky Masuku came on for Xolani Mpontshane while Vusimuzi Mncube replaced Zaphaniah Mbokoma.

This had a positive effect as Mncube would later set up Maziya for the opening goal with a minute left to play in regulation time.

Then in the first minute of stoppage time, Seun Ledwaba laid on a killer pass for Maziya to beat Van Der Linde and put the contest beyond the visitors.

Sunday’s victory lifted Cosmos two spots to 11th on the log as the team prepares for this weekend’s trip to Ubuntu Cape Town.
