Ezenkosi’s captain for last Sunday’s NFD game against FC Cape Town, Linda “Figo” Mntambo, has lamented the 1-1 result, blaming poor luck for the string of misses that could have turned Cosmos fortunes around.
Figo, who was handed the arm band following Frederic Nsabiyumva’s absence, said he was puzzled with the visitors’ ultra-defensive tactics particularly in the second stanza during which Cosmos lost a pile of chances that could have put the game away at Olen Park.
“Apparently they decided to sit back after scoring first, and I was wondering if we were ever going to break through. But obviously this tactic paid off for them. Their mission was to get a draw, and they were satisfied with the result because it was an away game for them,” he said.
Taking another retrospective look at the game, Linda, who scored the opening goal in Ezenkosi 3-1 defeat by Maritzburg United at the same venue last may, added that the Cosmos players gave a good account of themselves in spite of the outcome, and would go all out to take all three points when they visit Black Leopards after the FIFA break.
“We dictated the pace of the game for long periods but missed so many scoring opportunities. Well, congrats to them; it wasn’t just our day,” he recalled with a tinge of bitterness, adding, “And in all fairness to us as a team, I think we played well. The new lads may have committed a few blunders but they did their best even though the team had been built around the more senior players,” said the former Roses United midfielder.
“But we have put all of that behind us, and for now we are focused on the next game with Black Leopards. Our supporters must just rally behind us because we need to go all out and get those points,” he said with an air of finality.
