Ubuntu edge hard-fighting Cosmos to claim maximum points in NFD contest

Jomo Cosmos lost their 7th consecutive away game of the season when they went down 2-1 to Ubuntu Cape Town at Athlone Stadium last Friday.

A first half brace by Waseem Isaacs and a penalty goal by Zaphaniah Mbokoma after the break settled a thrilling NFD contest that could have gone either way.

The home side came out all guns blazing in the opening quarter of the game as Cosmos sat back absorbing the pressure.

Ezenkosi’s fragile back line would eventually crack after 10 minutes when Waseem Isaacs drifted into the box to nod in a cross by Siyambonga Madikane.

Silas Maziya should have restored parity on 33 minutes when he faced an open net following an interchange of passes with Carlo Gie, Seun Ledwaba and Matsilele Sono, but his cracking shot sailed over after smashing his initial effort against the crossbar.

Cosmos were made to pay for that costly miss a minute later when Isaacs connected with a stunning strike from Devon Saal’s angled cross to grab his brace.

Ubuntu went into the break with a 2-0 cushion and the Cosmos bench responded with two substitutions before the restart, as Stanley Umukoro came off for Sifiso Nkosi, while Inky Masuku was replaced by Chibuike Ohizu.

The changes had instant effect as Cosmos came back stronger, mounting a wave of attacks on their opponents.

Five minutes into the second stanza, Carlo Gie got a chance to reduce the deficit from outside the box, but the midfielder saw his scorcher hitting the upright and back into play.

Ezenkosi’s efforts paid off midway through the half with a penalty kick awarded after an Ubuntu defender had handled the ball inside the box.

Zaphaniah Mbokoma coolly stepped up to beat Malcolm Jacobs for his first goal of the season and give the visitors a ray of hope.

However, Ubuntu went on to survive a late comeback by Cosmos, including a disallowed ‘goal’ by Chibuike Ohizu at the death.

Cosmos next play TS Galaxy in a Nedbank Cup Round 16 fixture scheduled for Makhulong Stadium on 17 February, 2019.
