Iconic former South Africa national team coach and owner of Jomo Cosmos Football Club, Dr. Jomo Sono, was on Wednesday unveiled as President of African Football Legends.
In a ceremony and press briefing held at the Southern Sun hotel in Johannesburg, Sono was unanimously endorsed and given the mandate to lead the inaugural group for an initial period of eight years before election is conducted,
In the interim, Sono will be expected to coordinate, lead and approve all events and activities of the organization, said a statement signed by the Secretary General of the body, MOO Muhammad.
In his acceptance speech, Sono, who guided Bafana Bafana to silver medal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso in 1998 and led the same team to the World Cup tournament four years later, said he felt honoured to be accorded such recognition by a plethora of African football icons.
“This is indeed a special moment for me. I am so highly honoured to be accorded such recognition, and I want to express my gratitude to fellow legends who deemed it fit to give me such a mandate. Therefore I pledfge to do my very best to uplift the image of the game in Africa using the African legends forum as a platform,” Sono said.
