Cosmos tame Royal Eagles to stretch unbeaten run in NFD

Linda Mntambo scored the crucial winner for Ezenkosi

Jomo Cosmos extended their unbeaten run in the National First Division (NFD) to seven matches after dispatching Royal Eagles 2-1 at Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tebogo Makobela returned to the squad after serving a one-match suspension, while Tebogo “Messi” Tlolane made his first start after a long injury lay-off.

A topsy-turvy first half saw both teams going into the break deadlocked at 1-1 after Royal Eagles forward, Nkosivumile Zulu cancelled out Mxolisi Macuphu’s opening strike for Cosmos.

The home side came back stronger in a thrilling second half of attacking football, creating numerous chances but unable to put them away.  Cosmos later introduced the vastly experienced Clifford Mulenga in place of Mxolisi Macuphu while Tebogo “Messi” Tlolane paved way for Mmiseni “Ndishi” Ndlovu.

The changes seemed to pay dividends as this gave Ezenkosi added energy to go forward.

With seven minutes remaining on the clock, Ezenkosi Skipper, Linda “Figo” Mntambo popped up with the winning strike (his 5th goal of the season) when he fired an unstoppable left-footed cannon that sailed beyond the reach of Eagles’ goalkeeper, Joslin Mayebi.

The victory lifted Cosmos back to second place on the log, with 25 points from 14 matches, four adrift of table-toppers Highlands Park.
