First half goals the key as Uthongathi subdue Cosmos in Durban

Ezenkosi striker, Chibuike “Victor” Ohizu

Jomo Cosmos suffered their fourth defeat of the GladAfrica Championship when they went down 2-0 to log leaders Uthongathi FC at Princess Magogo Stadium, Durban last Saturday.

Ezenkosi failed to match the superiority of their hosts in a busy first half in which Francis Baloyi and Menzi Ndwandwe scored vital goals that secured maximum points for the Cane Cutters.

The Cosmos bench dropped the pair of Tumi Ngwepe and Sifiso Nkosi from the previous week’s starting XI, giving hard tackling midfielder, Mduduzi Sibeko his first official start of the season, while youngster Bonginkosi Gumede also made the cut.

However, the changes apparently failed to have the desired effect, though the visitors played a more compact game in the second stanza after Thomas Kgope, Sicelo Mkhize and Chijioke Omeke came in for Sibeko, Clint Fredericks and Chibuike Ohizu respectively.

Saturday’s win stretched Uthongathi’s lead at the top to five points with a game in hand, while Cosmos remained 14th with seven points in nine matches, also with a game in hand.
